How To Become More Valuable
The Art of Adding Value
“Value” (n): the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something.
Synonyms: worth, usefulness, advantage, benefit, gain, profit, good, help, merit, helpfulness.
What makes you valuable?
You have tremendous value within you, manifest it. The world needs YOUR unique value. Here are some ways to enhance your life and the lives of others.
1. Offer your help
Offer your help to others, when appropriate. If leadership isn’t around or you’re alone, find something to do that benefits others.
2. Ask questions
Asking the right questions can lead to answers and/or solutions to problems.
3. Solve a problem
Your ability to problem solve and/or help others find solutions is valuable.
Address problems by: observing, gathering details/information, brainstorming, creating, and evaluating solutions.
4. Address the needs of others
It is your responsibility to know & understand the needs of humans, so you can better contribute towards them.
What needs do humans have?
5. Become more knowledgeable
By becoming more knowledgeable you maximize your ability to apply & supply information. Knowledge gives you the information, skills, and ideas to offer any situation or activity.
6. Build your skills
Seek to improve and build relevant skills for the service(s) you’re providing. Attend local seminars, take courses, read widely, and gain experience.
7. Practice Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
8. Practice Servant Leadership
Change your mindset to that of a SERVANT. Your purpose is to perform. Use the power of your leadership to gather resources and make change happen.
“How can I help you get to where you need to be?”
“What can I do to help?”
“What needs to be done?”
9. Fully listen
Give your full undivided attention to others. Listen to understand first, then respond. Listen-Pause-Respond
10. Give more
Make the commitment to give all you have in that moment. Give because it’s the right thing to do. Give more than you receive.
11. Keep people informed
Share relevant information that is applicable to others, so they can take appropriate action(s). Keep people in the loop.
Know: upcoming dates, locations, current events, changes, and other happenings.
12. Do things fast
“Speed of Implementation” (n): the ability to act very quickly on new knowledge.
13. Give people options
People like options. Allow others the freedom to choose from options that you present. Giving people the power of choice makes you the facilitator of change, and represents respect.
14. Be observant
Spend time observing and understanding your environment, to better respond to it accordingly. By observing, you can see where value can be added.
15. Remember details
Become a storehouse of information so you can recall and deliver particulars to others.
Remember: names, projects, background information, locations, motivations, interests.
16. Do what others won’t do
Do key things that no one else wants to do. When you do the thing no one else wants to do, you differentiate yourself by embodying leadership.
17. Follow up
After ambiguous or uncertain situations, make sure to follow up. Provide support, information, or relevant messages to let others know you’re there for them. Follow up is mindfulness.
18. Know & use your resources
Know and use the resources available to you and others. Realize, you don’t have all the answers, but you should know where to point people who can help that person.
Save contact information, building hours, email addresses, job titles, etc.
19. Become more fit
Become more physically, mentally, and spiritually fit. Fitness brings freedom. Freedom to move, communicate, think, grow, and help others and yourself.
