How I got into League of Legends Esports
Let me start off by saying this is going to be raw as fuck. I am probably going to do 2–3 post about the idea of “getting into esports” the first one being the one you are reading, how I did it. The second being what it takes to get into the industry and the third being whatever else I can think of that will help. P.S. be prepared for a million grammar errors and probably spelling errors. Raw. As. Fuck.
Who Am I
For those who don’t know me I am the assistant manager for the LA Renegades, and the league of legends manager. Most people know Rob Leonyx Lee as the manager, and that is because he is. He’s my boss, i am his assistant, but at the end of the day I am the point of contact for the league of legends teams.
20/M/CA seeking esports job. Student at community college, working 2 jobs both 20+ hours a week, has girlfriend, plays league whenever possible, (without upsetting the mrs., but failed at the not upsetting part), watches LCS and LCK every week and Matt dreams of eSports.
Luck and hard-work
At the end of the day the paragraph above is what my resume and cover letter said. I send my resume to every LCS team and some challenger teams looking for an unpaid internships, or literally anything. Most know this story, rejected from almost everywhere. I get 2 bites from a LCS team and a NACS team, both saying we got nothing now try again later. Persistently tried again and again until Renegades gave me an interview to be an intern.
Gonna be honesty with you, the interview was sorta bullshit and had nothing to do with the work I actually do. However, it was like a personality test and i passed it LOL. The GM, Rob Leonyx Lee (fking great guy) started me off on small stuff, the kind of shit literally anyone with a brain could do and then the intensity revved up as i proved myself.
Over the next couple months I was working semi closely with the team and Rob to get the team ready with everything they needed to qualify for LCS. Watching scrims, watching matches, doing groceries, fulfilling sponsorship obligations, and all the other small errands people do.
Ok so to the two reasons i got the job, Luck and Hard-Work
Luck
Lets be real, I had no qualifications and no real reason to even have the opportunity to have gotten the internship. The luck was this guy, Rob Leonyx Lee (Sex God) saw a volunteer application and he said hey i could use an assistant, he lives less than 15 minutes away from us lets give him a shot. (i dnno why he hired me to be honest, i am pretty sure it was just a shot in the dark) I was Lucky i lived close in LA, I was lucky he picked me, i was lucky i could make time for it, and i was lucky i could FINANCIALLY afford to intern for free. Literally riddled by luck this whole time. Most of all, i am lucky Rob was the one to mentor me in my process. I literally cannot speak enough praise about this guy, and I owe him a bunch. He always has my back and I would say i always have his. We cute. Oh i guess the fact i was a barista at a boba shop the team went to helped (don’t tell my manager but i gave them free boba)
Hard Twerk
Luck only got me to the door, hard work is what got me in the door. If you don’t have any qualifications or experience you better make up for all that shit with hard work. While i was interning for Renegades, i was taking classes at community college and working 2 part times jobs on top of my renegades obligations. I worked 40+ hours a week and went to school 3 times a week for like 5 hours a day or some shit. It was tough as fuck. The most important thing in how I got the job was because every single chance i had i went above and beyond the expectations he set for me. I finished my tasks early, I made myself available, everything I did I did real well, and i was easy to work with and be sociable with. Next thing you know we qualify for LCS and I find myself with an opportunity to interview with Monte for the job as League manager and Asst Manager of Org. I Pass that and here I am. Slave, I mean asst manager of the org :D.
TL;DR Kid applied to intern, got LUCKY AS FUCK and scored an internship. Worked hard as fuck and was offered a job.
