Nice read, you make some lovely points. We used Scrum as a ‘gateway drug’ too and the rigour of it’s routines really helped us iron out bad habits. Over time we started to customise as we became familiar with other ways of working together.
We now have a Kanban board with daily stand ups and regular retros.
Sprints didn’t fit for us, having lots of clients feeding work into the team we couldn’t fix work for two weeks. Priorities would change too frequently as client stakeholders were not bought into the process.
We now estimate a few tickets after each stand-up, spending 5 mins max. The team know what the next three tasks ‘To Do’ are but don’t have to worry about the rest of the backlog order, as this can change daily.
