It’s Never Been Easier To Be A Writer
The State of the Business
It’s never been easier to be a professional writer.
You can build an entire online business, attract fans, blog every day (or every few days), get your name out there, advertise what you are working on, and build a great community.
The best part?
You can do all of this for free.
I was thinking this because I was reading A Moveable Feast by Hemingway the other day. This a story where he talks about his exploits as a young man in Paris with his first wife.
It wasn’t a specific thing he said. But it was what he did. He used to have to write short stories or stories he didn’t give a damn about in order to get known.
And it was like this for all writers who came before us, too.
They would have to keep pitching stories to various outlets that were all kept by various gatekeepers. It was very likely that you had to know someone in order to get your work published.
But now, with the age of the internet, almost anybody (look at me) can get on here and write, attract reads, views, and fans. For which, I am very grateful.
Yes, it is challenging to write every day. Yes, it is challenging to write at all. Sometimes your mind is feeling empty and blank.
Shoot, sometimes *you* are feeling empty and blank.
But the beautiful thing is you get to write something and put your mind in order, cultivate and connect with an audience that may be feeling the same.
Anybody can get on the internet and advertise their business. Anybody can wake up a few extra hours earlier and get to work on the business of writing. Anybody can connect.
Those connections are the true beauty of the age of the internet — the gatekeepers of times past are dying, and it is up to us to usher in a new age of writing.

My First Medium Account is dedicated to all things philosophy, and this is dedicated to more unfiltered thoughts on writing or any short-stories that I would like to see out in the public.
