From its very first days as a nation, America was founded on civility. After prolonged but chivalrous negotiations with Britain, all parties agreed on an equitable dissolution of government and the colonies became the United States. We expanded in much the same way: striking fair deals with native peoples that left all involved satisfied and prosperous.
