According to the estimates by the World Health Organization, every year sixty million people get sick for the hygienic conditions of food. Many of the problems related to food safety are based on the lack of access to traceability information. A recent study by the Food Marketing Institute showed that 40% of consumers require detailed information on how to buy food and want to know how and if the products they buy have been treated with additives, dyes and preservatives.

Actually we all want to know more about the food we eat.

Finnish consumers, fish lovers, now have the opportunity to trace the path taken by the fish fillet from the point of purchase to the lake in which it was caught.

The Finnish retailer S-Group is testing its “Pike-perch radar solution”, based on IBM Blockchain technology, as part of the group’s strategy to improve the customer experience. The goal is to increase transparency in the food chain and provide its customers with more information on the “road” that products face from the source to store shelves.

Consumers in Finland can then trace fish from the waters they were born up to home using the QR code on the fish pack or by accessing a monitoring website.

By using this solution, each Blockchain participant will be able to record the information for his or her part and such data may be used by the other participants.

The reliability of traceability data is guaranteed, since once inserted into the Blockchain, they can no longer be modified.

S-Group has worked for years to ensure greater transparency in national and foreign food chains. According to Senja Forsman, S-Group Retail Senior Compliance Manager, Blockchain is the next big step in this sector. Today it mainly provides information on the various fishing sites, in the future the customers will also be able to know which fisherman has caught the fish.

The Pike-perch radar solution, based on IBM Food Trust modules, is a collaborative solution built on the IBM Blockchain Platform and Hyperledger Fabric of the Linux Foundation, designed to efficiently and safely monitor food during each phase of the supply.

In the future, consumers will be able to prepare an entire meal with the products monitored through the Blockchain and this is amazing.
