Funny Is Not Enough

This is great, Seth. What’s interesting to me too is the difference between unethical jokes in stand-up vs. scripted comedy. I find it is much more problematic to have one human on stage spewing toxic waste (Oakerson) than to write a show or movie with characters who make offensive jokes (something like Family Guy, South Park, Seinfeld). In the latter, you are able to put fictional characters up against surrounding characters and society who likely don’t share their bigoted beliefs, allowing you to laugh at their ignorance. Great comics like Seinfeld and Louis CK are even able to use that in their stand up, but when people like Oakerson and Trump give us no context beyond their tirade, it is much more threatening.
