I agree with your main point, but our ancestors didn’t forfeit these rights. Rather, we sign them away ourselves when we tolerate police brutality, lead-poisoned water, wage gaps, food deserts, and underfunded, de facto segregated schools. When there are five empty houses for each homeless person, when we grow more than enough food yet many go hungry — after depriving so many of their fundamental rights, it seems not only required but inadequate that we respect their songs of struggle.
