Do You Hate Me

Do you hate me
Well I know you may not have met me
But do you hate me
I mean you may know nothing about me
But do you hate me
So if I told you I was black
Would you hate me
If I told you I moved to your country
Would you hate me
What if I was a woman
What if I was a gay man
What if I was Muslim, Christian or Jewish
Would you hate me
Even though you don’t know who I am
Or what I've done
Would you sit behind your keyboard
Hidden in your anonymity
Free to spew whatever vitriol you want at me
Would you say it to my face
Even though we've never spoken
The hatred that was awoken
Just because of what you see
Or would you just hate me in secret
Why do we continue to hate irrationally
Based ancient ideas
Entrenched in our psyche
It’s time we let go of the hate
Step back from the keyboard before it’s too late
If I was a book, I’d be more than the cover
If you just stopped to ask that’s what you’d discover
