I am Jack’s busy life

‘ Then you’re trapped in your lovely nest, and the things you used to own, now they own you.’

Whenever I hear someone say “I’m too busy to [insert task here, eg review that document, check my children’s homework, exercise, communicate in any way]”, I hear “That is not a priority for me”. Hey, I get it, people are busy these days, but I believe that if we actually give a shit about something we make time for it.

Why are we so busy? It’s no secret that we have more to do these days. So what happens when we have some spare time? We fill that gap with ‘stuff’.

We watch Netflix.

We read click-bait disguised as news.

We plan our next purchase.

We play games on our mobile phones.

While being busy playing Candy Crush one day, my son asked me “What happens when you win?” — “Ummm… nothing.” Nothing. It’s fucking meaningless. I am filling in the spaces in my life with distractions. I could reel off a list of these mini-escapisms that are cluttering up my time and making me busy.

‘ Generations have been working in jobs they hate, just so they can buy what they don’t really need.’

‘Things’ are a poor substitute for conversation. Take a look around your life. Think about the tasks that fill your workday. Think about your possessions. Think about the apps on your phone. Are they fulfilling a purpose, or making you busy?

Now put down your phone.
