There’s a long history of first person narratives in journalism. I don’t know for sure if Nellie Bly wrote first person, but she was the reporter who got herself committed to an insane asylum to write an undercover report on the horrible conditions, and to help reform the systems. This type of first person reporting I’ve been seeing more of in media reminds me of this.
Exactly. Living with chronic pain and invisible pain makes us feel so alone, terrified, and angry that we have bodies/bones of elderly people. And yet, so many of us dealing with this pain feel this way — so really, yes, we can truly understand what it’s like to be 20, or 25, or whatever and feel like we live in a body that is failing or older than us.
