From Crashing Into Icebergs to Saving Icebergs: Leonardo DiCaprio as an Environmental Activist

Although I do not stay up-to-date on celebrity gossip, I will certainly turn my head when I hear about an actor or artist vocalizing their support for issues that are important to them. I recognize that many people tend to emulate their idols’ behavior, which is why I value celebrities who make the most of their podium. Leonardo DiCaprio is no exception.

In fact, I consider him at the top of the celeb list of those who should be appreciated for making environmental issues resonate with supporters. The extent to which he advocates for the well-being of our planet is telling of authenticity, intellect, and compassion.

DiCaprio is not the type who writes a check, attends a gala, and then calls it quits. He is an active environmentalist who strives to engage his fans in taking actionable steps to creating a more sustainable world. I appreciate that he walks his talk. Most notably, he founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) in 1998 to bring awareness and financial support to issues such as wildlife and habitat preservation, clean drinking water access, climate change, and disaster relief. LDF aims to make impact through facilitating collaborations among decision makers, as well as, leveraging DiCaprio’s 10M+ Twitter following (@LeoDiCaprio) by encouraging action and educating on issues.

Additionally, DiCaprio is the writer, co-producer, and narrator for 11th Hour, a documentary about the state of humanity and the world. The film includes contributions from over 50 politicians, scientists, and environmentalists! As a testament to the quality and impact of the work, the movie trailer alone has a 1M+ views.

In addition to creating compelling media, DiCaprio lends his expertise and influence as a board member to non-profits such as World Wildlife Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council, and Global Green USA. I think this shows that he truly wants to learn how he can sink his teeth into issues.

Back in elementary school I had a Titanic viewing party as soon as the movie was released and subsequently watched it 30+ times over the next year. Little did I know, my childhood heart throb would aspire to create large-scale environmental impact. DiCaprio’s work is a testament to the potential that other celebrities will hopefully soon meet.
