Cootehill man Simon Ward is saddling up for a charity cycle in memory of Ger McDonnell, the legendary Irish explorer and first Irish man to summit K2 and Everest. It’s a 112km cycle from Doolin, Co. Clare to Ger’s hometown of Kilcoran Co. Limerick and funds raised will go to the Limerick Learning Hub which is helping young people explore their potential, and to the Butterfly Club, a social club for children with special needs.

Simon Ward

Simon is the son of the late Pete Ward, who was well known throughout Ireland for his work in education, theatre and architecture. He is currently based in London but remains a close link with home. Co. Clare is also a second home to him as it’s where his partner Aisling hails from. This is the first time Simon has taken on a challenge like this and he says it’s excited but also a bit nervous.

“I’ve never been much of a cyclist and my fitness levels weren’t the best to be honest. But when I heard about this opportunity I figured I might as well give it a go. It’s great to be able to honour Ger like this to raise funds for two amazing causes. I’m in awe of the work that they do and inspired to know they are out there changing lives. The world needs more of these types of people” said Simon.

“The groundswell of support behind me has been amazing and I’m grateful to everyone who has chipped in online and provided sponsorship and other support. It’s yet another example of the great community spirit that is so alive and well in Ireland.”
