Product Marketing Manager
Medium is growing fast. We passed 2 million posts right before the New Year. We host tens of thousands of writers each week and tens of millions of readers each month. We launch new product features and partnerships all the time. And yet to date, we’ve built Medium with almost no investment in marketing.
It’s time to let the world in on what’s happening here.
What we need
We are searching for an expert product marketer, focused on telling our story to individual writers, publishing partners, and readers. You will work closely with our head of marketing, the product organization, and the design team to build strategies for growing Medium and communicating the value of our platform.
You will build and manage launch plans, making sure that product, design, communications, and all external partners work together seamlessly to reach the right audience with the best message. This could include fresh marketing content (videos, posts, emails), events, direct response campaigns, or consumer media campaigns.
To do the job well, you will be asked to develop meaningful market knowledge. We will give you the creative freedom to ideate and drive initiatives aimed at growing the Medium network. Want to create a podcast featuring the best Medium content? Or grassroots Medium writing clubs at colleges around the country? Or build a 40-foot long burrito to commemorate this post?* Convince us of the merit and make it happen.
Who you are
As a young company, we are marketing an attitude as much as we are marketing a product. Until we’re big, we need to be cool. Or at least we need to be smart and quirky (which is still kind of cool). We need someone who understands that attitude. That means you have passion for what Medium is today and can be. It means you hate to see low brow stories flying through your social feeds, or janky ad experiences ruining web sites you used to love. You want a better web and think we have a puncher’s chance of delivering it.
We believe Medium is the world’s best writing platform, so we want marketers who write. Our audience is made up of real, passionate, smart humans and we strive to communicate with them in a way that respects their intelligence and doesn’t hide ours. Wit is welcome. Bullet points are not.
We are open to candidates from non-traditional backgrounds, though ideally you’ve had tangible experience in a similar role at a tech company or progressive media company. If you’re a good marketer, you’ll easily convince us why you fit.
If all of that sounds interesting, apply here.
*These are all real ideas that people have pitched internally. We’re not saying they are all good ideas, but they are ideas.
