Scene 2
INT School Dance
JONIE, 16, hair straight but uneven, sat in a chair in a pale rose colored dress. A line of blue chairs next to the punch bowl. Most empty except opposite of her a boy sat. DAN, 15, in a suit and tie but not looking the part, with his head held up by his hands staring comatose outwards. Defeated posture.
The dresses of the girls twirl as they spin across the dance floor in a pretty dress colors. A guy, JERRY from out of the blur of teenagers see her and gives her a wink.
Dan gets up and walks towards Jonie.

Dan: “You wanna dance with me?”
Jonie: “Uh no, not right now. Maybe later.”
Dan: “You’re no Miss popular either!”
Jonie: “I didn’t say I was. It’s not you. I’m just tired right now.”
Dan: “Whatever. “
Dan marches back to his chair. They both watch the dance floor in silence. Dan’s arms are crossed.

Then Jonie looks up to see Jerry, a tall handsome guy strut towards her.
Jerry: “Care to have this dance?”
Jonie: “Sure.” Dan looks at her leave with a scowl.
She follows Jerry to the dance floor and they begin to dance. Then she hears people snickering around her. She pushes herself out of Jerry’s arms, but he pulls her back, holding her and forcing her body to keep dancing with his hand on her back. The laughter gets louder.

She manages to get out and runs outside. As she does, we see Dan has followed her.
Jonie: “What do you want?”

Dan: This is why I hate girls like you.
Jonie: Girls like me?
Dan: Even after that display of public humiliation showing how worthless you are in this school’s ranking system, you still think you get to talk to me that way.

Jonie: What way?
Dan: Like I’m filth beneath your preppy little shoe.
Jonie: I didn’t mean it that way.
Dan: We’ll see about that.

Jerry with an arm around a girl comes out and smiles when he sees Jonie and Dan still there.
Jerry: My favorite couple. Let’s go to a real party eh?

Dan and Jonie shake their heads, but he pushes them forward and into his car which has the door now opened by one of his friends.
The fall on top of each other and the door closes with a bang.
