Scene 5
INT Catholic Church Confessional
KEVIN early thirties is talking to a priest ZIEGAL. ZIEGAL is in his early 40s.
The church is roman style, elegant swooping arches. Full with a sense of the past and spirit.
Kevin walks to the booth and opens a fabric door it falls back down dramatically as he enters the dark room. Kevins soft breath is all that can be heard as he waits.
In a few minutes Ziegal enters the room on the side adjacent, Kevin hears the door click. Kevin’s eyes peer through the darkness trying to see though he knows he won’t. Ziegal’s voice comes through the grates low and quiet.
Ziegal: Hello child.
Kevin: Bless me father for I have sinned.
Kevin makes the cross gesture with his fingers.
Ziegal: What sins do you wish to confess today?
Kevin: I have fornicated.
Ziegal: And do you promise to-
Kevin: with another man.
Ziegal: I see. And why did you-
Kevin: He was a man of the Lord. But I am not sure if he is now.
Ziegal: Just promise never to do it again and-
Kevin: I’m not sure I want to do that.
There is a long silence.
Ziegal: Then you can’t be forgiven.
Kevin: I know.
Ziegal: This is a confessional. If you don’t promise not to do it again then why are you here?
Kevin: I want him to come back to me. If he did it once, he is no longer holy in the eyes of the Lord.
Ziegal: This man you’re referring to maybe made a mistake, and I imagine has asked forgiveness for his sins and you should do the same.
Kevin: Could he really be forgiven just like that?
Ziegal: Everyone is human here, everyone has the potential to fall in sin. But it is the Lords forgiveness that brings light to us all.
Kevin: Yes I know you are right.
Ziegal: That is good. So will you ask forgiveness and promise to try to rid yourself of these evil ways?
Kevin: Okay. But can I just ask one more thing?
Ziegal: Go ahead.
Kevin: If this man cannot be forgiven, then he could come back to me, I mean there would be nothing there for him? He’d be living a lie. Which is a sin too.
Ziegal: I don’t think so. I think this man has dedicated his life and would not throw it away like that. I’m sure he’s very sorry.
Kevin starts to leave
Ziegal: Aren’t you going to ask for forgiveness?
Kevin: No. I know I’m already damned. Thank you father.
Kevin walks out, dramatically pushing aside the curtain as he goes.
