(translated by Adriana Scamporrino)
I swear: I didn’t want to write anything about this. I didn’t want to, because I felt like dedicating myself to some naif bullshit, like “10 hacks on how to share a toilet with a man without hating him”. I didn’t want to because I am, essentially, a dreamer. Honestly, I thought that in 2018 it was no longer needed to get in writing a long list of obvious facts. Unfortunately, however, last Tuesday I had this unlucky idea of commenting about CitizenGo loathsome campaign against abortion on my Facebook page (I, indeed, refer to that billboard judging termination of pregnancy as the number one cause of feminicide worldwide, i.e a lot of crap presented as credible).
To follow, I had to read thousands of comments, most of which were horrific. So I decided to venture for a detailed Ethology of Anti-abortion groups (they’re everywhere, all around us, and we need to learn how to recognize them), based on those categories of people debating on my profile, that indeed represent a considerable sample of cultural regression that is, alas, a reflection of our society.
Before getting to the hearth of the matter, I’d like to make three essential preliminary remarks. Step one: get some info on CitizenGo, a reactionary Ultra-Catholic neo-fascist organization. Here you can find an article on Vice, but if you understand Spanish, you can read up here, or here or there (many thanks to Maria Nardelli for her suggestions). Second step: many readers (even those pro-abortion) may find this post disturbing, since it was written it from the gut and it is very provocative. In case you are not open-minded enough, if you are far too politically correct and if nothing is ever pissing you off, I strongly advise against any reading. Third and last step: I do respect freedom of speech, so far as it concerns having a bright, intelligent opinion, not necessarily matching with mine: I do face different ones on a daily basis and I do accept them, since they often help me delineate my point of view.
But, please, no bullshit allowed. I can’t stand it. So, feel free to tell me that I’m inconsistent, contradictory, totalitarian, that I’m fucking radical. Whatever. As a matter of fact, even Adolf Hitler had his own opinions, and freedom of speech is not an excuse to give vent to overwhelming stupidity, obscurantism or total ignorance. Having said that, let’s get into the Ethology of Anti-abortion groups.
1. Fundamentalist Anti-abortionists
They won’t listen to reason: abortion is murder. Period. A fully-fledged homicide, legally accepted due to unacceptable Law №194 of the Italian Constitution. I like to think that this kind of anti-abortionists are constantly concerned about human embryo life and well-being, that those people don’t even pick any daisies from their gardens (they got a life, too!), they don’t have any goose down jackets (since it’s not very nice to brutally pluck poor geese for our own comfort) and, obviously, those people don’t eat any bacon (it’s not cool what happens to pigs when they get butchered; well, they cry, even though they just spend their lives wallowing in mud; pigs understand they’re bound to so die badly and get desperate before being slaughtered; of course, we could admit that ‘speciesism’, i.e. that our human beings life, even when potential, have a much higher value compared to all other beings living on earth one, but I doubt Jesus Christ and Saint Francis would agree on this). This kind of anti-abortionists consider without discrimination any woman having an abortion a murderer. They talk in clichés, not even trying to argue their points but, if possible, making very detailed, truculent reviews on the way how, according to them, abortion is made, killing millions of ‘babies’ (vocabulary used is never random) because of dissolute, guilty women. We stand firm in front of conviction, with no possibility of parole.
2. Moderate Anti-abortionists
They do consider abortion a murder, but it’s OK to get one that if you get raped and pregnant. I mean, if you’re a victim, if you were abused, it’s OK to go for a voluntary termination of pregnancy. Or, it’s acceptable as well (perhaps), if you risk kicking the bucket for that pregnancy. Also, it’s OK too, if the condom breaks and you get pregnant (even though moderate anti-abortionists are sure that this is some kind of urban legend and that condoms are always foolproof). In any other case, abortion is not admitted and women having one are all wicked, selfish, stupid bitches who should be sterilized, like pets.
According to this group of anti-abortionists, there should be a kind of Moral Court deciding, on a case by case basis, who has the right to have an abortion and who doesn’t. Now, one of their favorite arguments is concerning ‘overused abortion’. In other words, they’re sure that, since there’s a ratio of women having an abortion due to their shallowness (i.e. lack of contraception), this kind of abortion should be strictly forbidden, as if it was a crime against humanity. That is, with all due respect, as to say that, since in the world there’s plenty of fat people pigged out on chocolate, chocolate should be illegal. Sometimes I ask myself if, for example, those who dispensed with Catholic moral lessons on my Facebook page had at least read the news on the massacre happened the day before in Gaza, which claimed hundreds of victims, including children. Jeez, we are not speaking about white kids and, most probably, they’re less valuable. Still, those were real kids, uh, born and killed. I am asking if those anti-abortionists calling for feminicide are ever outraged by stories of ordinary violence against women, or if they claim feminicide being invented by furry legs feminists. Maybe we have been constantly asking for it, for all those reasons why women have always, historically speaking, been guilty of everything. More or less, starting from Eve on.
3. Male chauvinist anti-abortionists
We now take into consideration these men who, basically, hate women. However, this position is often assumed by women themselves (that, as we know, do not devoid any misogyny). If you decide getting an abortion for any kind of personal reason, you’re a murderer whose head is full of strange ideas such as, like, studying, having a career or rejecting being reduced to the role of mother without even taking into account your lifestyle, ambitions or any kind of things that could influence this kind of choice. Male chauvinist anti-abortionists are not the ones for subtlety, they are glad to point their fingers against women, who are nothing but stupid whores who should have thought of that before…and, in case they didn’t, it’s their fucking problem. According to this group of anti-abortionists, contraception is undoubtedly a women exclusive prerogative, as if men were totally incapable of contributing themselves of preventing unwanted pregnancies.
As if men were not big fans of the pull-out method, ’cause their tool can last better, ’cause it feels better and since, skin to skin, it’s actually better. In the same way, the male chauvinist anti-abortionists don’t even question that parenting should concern both genders, not only starting from the moment of conception, but even during children’s growth, in terms of education, work regulations too. In 2018 A.D., all this only underlines the unequal responsibilities that a child brings, which have a much bigger impact on a woman’s life than on a man’s one. In the face of this objections, male chauvinist anti-abortionists might make up something concerning human nature, biology, and even mention the idea that it’s always been like that.
4. Generational anti-abortionists
They’re the ones picking on women and applying filters based on their age. If, for instance, it’s an adult woman to choose whether to continue with a problematic pregnancy, in which the baby is bound to have serious medical malformation, it’s the definitely her fault, since she reminded herself to have a baby at the age of 37, due to who knows what kind of nonsense activities she was busy with. If the girl having an abortion is in her twenties, instead, it’s all because young people today suck and believe that abortion is a contraceptive method. As if they were actually to blame for their sexual ignorance, as if it wasn’t at all related to a society intentionally ignoring what sexual education is.
Maybe, and I say maybe, it’s high time to open a serious constructive educational debate on STD prevention and unplanned pregnancy. If it’s true that young people don’t know shit about sex (and contraception, too), if it’s true that the percentage of condoms sold to young age groups is gradually falling, maybe this is all depending on adults subcontracting any type of sexual education to Pornhub. Education, no repression. It doesn’t seem hard to me. It is not a solution to pick on a right that is, GET OVER IT, guaranteed by law. The answer is creating a new sex culture where’s not. It’s not about going back to Middle Age, forgetting historical events and fights, or even questioning a Referendum which spoke 40 years ago on a topic you’re still busting our balls about.
5. Conscientious objector anti-abortionists
Last, but not least: doctors working in public hospitals who don’t perform abortion (even though nothing forbids them to use curettage in private, even charging a substantial fee). They call themselves pro-life, as if women defending their freedom not to maintain a pregnancy were pro-death. These doctors would rather not take action and letting women die rather than proceed with termination of pregnancy (these are, unfortunately, the news, this is not sci-fi). They’re the ones deserting their duties in the name of their personal beliefs. They constitute one of the worse paradoxes of our national health care system, a terrible shame for a country like ours that is, indeed, considered secular. If, by the law, I can get an abortion, I should be able to have one and there SHOULDN’T BE hospitals where it’s impossible to get one because every doctor objects doing it (in some Italian regions, I say REGIONS, it is basically a pipe dream to fine a gynecologist who’s not a conscientious objector).
Well, I know this will make me unpopular and drastic, but when I read the testimony of women telling about the ups and downs they go for in order get an abortion, when I read about the health risks they go through due to doctors’ total indifference, when women confess the moral judgment they suffer from people who should, instead, help them, I do believe that conscientious objectors should be suspended. If you decide to pick this career, you know you gotta assist and take care of women who decide to get an abortion, having the right to do it, to the same extend as you have to assist and take care of women who decide to maintain a pregnancy. Period. There shouldn’t be room for negotiation, but there’s still some and, honestly, it’s enough. If you’re not comfortable in terminating a pregnancy, go be a baker and leave the job to those who bear its honor and glory, because it’s a role you can’t measure up. End of story.
I read comments stressing out how gynecology doesn’t only consist of abortions, and how medicine is saving people, not killing them. Right. But, HELLOOOO, abortion was performed even before, and women were dying due to rough, unhygienic, unscientific procedures applied. Cut-wives made room for medicine and you gotta deal with it. There’s something called freedom of choosing what to do about your pregnancy, your body and your life. Doctors paid in public hospitals should guarantee this right to be respected, to the same extend as law enforcement should guarantee safety and lawyers should guarantee the best defense possible. Why? Because they are professionals. Because this is an integral part of the profession they chose. If they don’t do it, that’s a problem. A huge problem. THE END.
Having said that, nobody likes the idea of an abortion and I don’t want my piece to be though as an apology of interruption of pregnancy, because it’s not that. For my part, the matter is all about stopping questioning freedom of choice that has already been questioned. It is high time to stop deciding who has to have kids and who, instead, has no right to have or adopt children. The matter is all in stopping judging, ignoring what impact and abortion has, but not only taking into consideration the embryo/fetus; what impact it has on WOMEN; how it can be more or less complex to take a decision that, we all agree, would be preferred to avoid in the first place (having safe sex, and if we have already stopped doing it, we should start instead speaking about how prevention is better than cradle). The point is to stop distinguish between people who have the right to get an abortion and people who don’t. It’s to stop accusing of murder somebody that, according to Italian law, is NOT a murderer. It’s all about, according to me, to vindicate women’ untouchable freedom of choice and guarantee them the possibility to get non-illegal abortions. Honestly, I do not believe there are women that, facing an unplanned pregnancy, would get an abortion as easily as if they were going for a bikini wax. All this, to me, stinks of small propaganda; or ignorance and, once again, the antidote to ignorance is never more ignorance.
I personally never got an abortion and I hope I will never find myself in the condition of getting one, because I’m sure it wouldn’t be an easy choice. If tomorrow I got pregnant, I would keep it. If I had gotten pregnant at 20 years old, I don’t know what I would have done. It’s true that, indeed, we got contraception, ma it’s hypocrite not to admit that it’s often not used and that is, indeed, a mistake to be remedied educating, not denying rights already acquired. To get or not to get an abortion is an extremely personal choice in a woman’s life, it concerns intimacy, and neither blame nor moral judgment helps. Let Heavenly Father do his Heavenly Father’s job, if you believe in him. And for the rest, KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OUR FREEDOM.
Women, we all now understand the value of this freedom: let’s raise our voice, then. Since darkness is moving forward, at this rate, we’ll end up re-establishing honor crime and withdrawing the right to vote. All is happening while a more civil world, where euthanasia, IVF, adoption for gay and single people could be allowed, seems to be more and more an foolish dream.
Now, after giving up on a good number of followers, after being sure to get a nice spot in hell where to burn for all eternity, I’d like to say goodbye. I’ll go masturbate, just to distract myself.
