Would A Mandatory Retirement Age Help (Most) Academics?
Ester Bloom

I think universities need to rethink the whole concept of tenure. Given the high quality of adjuncts available (due to the over-supply of people graduating with PhDs), I think the benefits of having a mostly-adjust faculty with very few tenured teachers outweigh the negatives.

I can certainly understand the benefits of tenure from a teacher perspective (i.e., life-time guaranteed employment), but the negatives to the university are significant. If I were a university president, I significantly reduce the tenure positions and reduce the tuitions accordingly.
