Of course it’s a choice. The writer said she deliberately chooses to listen in on conversations which involve race, then acts as a self-appointed moral arbiter. She believes that because one of her parents is a minority, she has greater insight into racial topics than her colleagues. No one has asked her to do this. It’s completely voluntary.
