On one hand, I agree with you. There certainly is a lot of waste in government programs and eliminating the waste would free up money to spend elsewhere. You’re right.

On the other hand, government-provided cradle-to-grave medical care for all US residents would be extraordinarily expensive (e.g., $400b per year just for California). I don’t think that eliminating government waste would pay for it. I think the government would have to cut a lot of other programs, so we’d have to weigh the benefits of what would be cut against the medical care program.

Until we know how much the program will cost and how to pay for it, I think discussions about the cradle-to-grave medical care are simply wishful thinking. If we can’t pay for it, we can’t have it.
