These stories usually don’t allow for the number of people who have dropped out of the workforce altogether. Focussing solely on the official unemployment rate presents a skewed positive picture.

My rough understanding is that if the workforce participation rate was kept at the same level as the Bush administration, then the unemployment rate would be significantly higher.

Using the official unemployment rate as the sole evaluation of the economy falls under lies, damned lies and statistics.
