I’ve mostly just come around to the idea that rather than letting the expense frighten or overwhelm me, I should take each new thing I consider (I have to buy the little person clothes!??!) and add it to my planning.

Yes, I absolutely agree with your approach. I find that creating a budget helps me to think through the costs of any potentially overwhelming event (e.g., wedding, house, child). If you don’t have a budget and are simply responding to events as a series of unexpected surprises, then you’re constantly stressed and worries. A little bit of planning goes a long way.
