Yes, this is an excellent point. I agree with you that the universities are unlikely to tell you that you’ll effectively be a serf. It’s incumbent on the prospective grad students to do their research beforehand. Probably when they were undergrads, the grad students had authority in the classroom and the undergrads weren’t aware of their outside-the-class circumstances.
