Why Age of Sigmar is good, part 3

So it is, the grand finale. Well, not so literal – the new world expands fast and will be surely for decades, but its core is already shaped. So let’s proceed.
The essence of the new planes was taken from the D&D, because in high fantasy it’s D&D which takes lead (and MtG a bit as well). D&D is itself based on the Scandinavian, Indian and Japanese mythology, and Age of Sigmar burrows from them too, but its fantasy shape is clearly a D&D one. A very good choice, because in high fantasy you won’t find anything better if you’re looking for large scales, epic deeds and gods among men.
The main idea of the planes, taken from the D&D and MtG, was shaped according to the Warhammer, because the Old World had not quite died, it was used to create a foundation for the new one, and links to it are spread out here and there, from the rules to the well known characters. So the old good Winds of Magic shaped the new planes, all of them becoming these planes and vice verse. Each of them is then unique, just like Eberron or Dark Sun are (or MtG planes for that matter).
Many of our characters, and all the main ones, are still old. Sigmar, Grimnir, Grungni, Chaos Gods, Archaon, Alarielle, Nagash… They are still ready and rarin’, and rightly so – they are now gods of their planes, which defines also forces they command. Grim and long dead skeletons, ghosts and vampires march under the command of Nagash or his Mortarchs from the dark and silent Shyish, the World of Death. Various treefolk still fights on the Nurgle invasion of Ghyran, the World of Life. Legions of the Dark Gods are pouring out of the Realm of Chaos under the lead of Archaon, the Exalted Grand Marshal of the Apocalypse. It’s still what we know well, but on much grander scale, with really epic fights, betrayals, every day war without end and new stuff we have not seen yet. In this regard it’s more 40k – merciless unending meat grinder against the relentless legions of Chaos. But hope still lives.
Age of Sigmar is developing itself very quickly, and so it’s a good start for a new era. We will see, what brings us the Future.
