I emphasize “read” here because it is much easier to be a passive consumer of visual or audio media (TV, radio) than it is to passively consume the written word. Plus, when you have the written words in front of you, you can easily circle back to things you skimmed over initially, click through to other reporting that adds depth to what you’re reading, and check reporters’ math.
