Against “Don’t Read the Comments”
Anil Dash

I have written for various red meat political blogs for nearly four years (don’t judge me). At first, I faithfully attended to every comment, attempting to encourage civil discourse. I gave up on that after about a week.

Online civility has become endangered partly because engagement means ad revenue even when it’s not *civil* engagement. The only way to encourage content creators to curate against abuse would be to change the pay structure of the internet or convince people to give up on “angry” money. At this point, online commenters are so acclimated to outrage porn, they hardly even stop to think before they start typing in all caps.

That said, I really appreciate what you are doing. I hope for the sake of all the civil people in the world that you succeed.
