Your new favorite way to enjoy coffee

Recently I have found a new love for cold brew coffee.

I always preferred cold brew coffee over hot coffee.

For one, I enjoy the taste of cold brew over any hot brewed coffee. Second, it has a lower acidity level which is more gentle on the stomach, so that’s a big win right there.

Occasionally I’ll go to Dunkin for a cold brew but typically I make cold brew at home, in the fridge. I have done the mason jar method in the past but more recently I have been using a cold brew pitcher that has the filter built into the lid. (Similar to this one here)

Cold brew and iced coffee are NOT the same.

Cold brew typically takes 24–48 hours to get to the flavor profile that I like from the methods I have tried.

That means you have to make your coffee before you’re planning to drink it.

Since there are two of us drinking coffee in this house, sometimes I want to drink a cold brew but it’s not ready to drink yet…that is where the Aeropress steals the show.

I stumbled upon the Aeropress at a bin store. It claimed to be able to brew different styles of coffee including cold brew so I took the chance and bought it. What a great decision that turned out to be!

The box showed that it makes regular coffee, espresso style coffee, and cold brew in minutes.

I might be late to the party as I’ve learned this company has been around for a long time and it has a cult following and even a world championship! (The website boasts that there are 5,000+ competitors from over 60 countries vying to be the sole champion)

There are Facebook groups and websites dedicated to Aeropress so there are hundreds of unique recipes out there to try.

I like to use the inverted method when I brew.

How I make my cold brew coffee:

I take a rounded scoop of coffee and add it to the chamber, I then add about 100g of filtered water on top and using the stirring stick provided I stir for 1 minute. I’ll fill a glass ¾ of the way with ice and then press the coffee directly over the ice. It’s a concentrated coffee so I’ll top off the remaining space in the glass with more filtered water. It comes out awesome! I’m shocked to get such a flavorful glass of cold brew coffee in under 2 minutes! It’s seriously delicious and enjoyable. I have to use self-control to limit myself to one glass of coffee because they are that damn good.

Recipe:

1 Rounded Scoop of coffee

100g filtered water

Small glass filled 3/4 with ice cubes

Add coffee and water to the brew chamber (inverted)

Stir for 1 minute

Press and brew over a glass of ice

Top with filtered water

Savor and enjoy :)

I limit my caffeine intake to just mornings when I need more focus. After I’ve been awake for 90 minutes and on the days I need to focus my attention on work or writing, I’ll make a cold brew. I use it as a tool, but I know how easily caffeine addiction can take over so I remain disciplined at limiting consumption, but when I consume, I want it to be an experience!

I’m at the bottom of my glass as I finish writing this and I’m savoring the last few sips.

Aeropress has helped me find a new appreciation for coffee.

In conclusion:

Aeropress is my new favorite way to make cold brew coffee. It takes less than 2 minutes to make a finished product that tastes better than the pitcher method which takes a full day to brew.

The Aeropress itself is also inexpensive.

The single-serve Aeropress which is what I have can be purchased here

Or if you prefer a larger size to make more than 1 cup at a time, they just released an XL version here

The only con I have is that it’s made out of plastic.

With forever chemicals being an issue, and the fact that most people will be using boiling water, I wish they made either a stainless steel or ceramic-coated version.

On the bright side, the company announced last year that they are making an Aeropress Premium version which will not have any plastic, but as of the time of this writing, there has been no ETA released. I look forward to that version as I will be on the pre-order list because the Aeropress rocks!

Have a kick-ass day!
