Tallow Lotion Benefits and Recipe (Scroll to bottom for recipe)

First, let’s discuss some of the benefits of tallow lotion.

Natural Moisturization:

  • Tallow is rich in natural fats, such as stearic acid and oleic acid, which are similar to the oils produced by human skin. This similarity allows tallow lotion to deeply moisturize the skin without clogging pores or leaving a greasy residue.

Nourishing and Healing Properties:

  • The nutrients in tallow, including vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as essential fatty acids, provide nourishment to the skin and support its natural healing processes. This can be beneficial for conditions like dryness, eczema, psoriasis, and sensitive skin.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects:

  • Tallow contains anti-inflammatory compounds that can help soothe and calm irritated or inflamed skin. Regular use of tallow lotion may reduce redness, itching, and discomfort associated with various skin conditions.

Improved Skin Barrier Function:

  • The fatty acids in tallow help strengthen the skin’s barrier function, protecting it from environmental stressors, pollutants, and moisture loss. This can result in smoother, more resilient skin over time.

Gentle and Non-Irritating:

  • Tallow lotion is typically well-tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive skin. It is free from synthetic fragrances, preservatives, and harsh chemicals, making it a gentle option for those with reactive or easily irritated skin.

Sustainable and Ethical:

  • Using tallow in skincare products promotes sustainability and ethical practices in the beauty industry. We already know that animal testing is cruel but an unfortunate necessity in the beauty industry as they try to create chemical formulas that have the least noticeable side effects. Tallow is a byproduct of the meat industry, making it a renewable resource that reduces waste and supports a more holistic approach to animal utilization. No animal testing is required.

Versatility and Effectiveness:

  • Tallow lotion can be used on various parts of the body, including the face, hands, feet, and body. Its emollient properties make it effective for hydrating rough, dry patches and maintaining overall skin health.

Now let’s get to the basics of making tallow lotion at home.

Making Tallow Lotion at home is pretty straightforward to do.

The best part is, that you can control how fresh the ingredients are as well as which (if any) scents and essential oils you add.

I will give a basic breakdown of how I do mine, but I encourage you to tinker around with the ingredient ratios to find the consistency and end product that works best for you.

So the first thing you’re going to need is fresh tallow.

If you don’t have tallow or don’t know how to make it yet, check out this article teaching you how I make tallow easily at home.

Tallow Recipe

Get a medium to large-sized glass bowl

Avocado oil (or whatever oil you choose)

*Hand mixer

*Essential Oils

*Optional but recommended

I like to make my batches about the same way each time.

I use a little more than a cup of tallow added to my glass bowl

I then add about ¼ cup of Avocado Oil

This part is optional, but I recommend taking the time to do it.

A whipped product feels much nicer and looks more luxurious.

Take a hand mixer and whip up the tallow. Get it nice a fluffy.

You can even try whipping the tallow before adding the avocado oil to get it even more fluffy.

Either way, mix the tallow and oil for as long as you have patience for. The longer you mix, the fluffier it tends to get as the air gets mixed into the product.

If you want an unscented lotion, you’re done.

I like adding essential oils to mine, not only for the scent but to get the added health benefits that many essential oils provide.

Avoid anything citrus as it can cause photosensitivity and possibly burn when in the sun.

Great options to try:

Lavender

Frankincense

Sandalwood

Hyacinth

Chamomile

I can’t make claims about health benefits but you can do research into essential oils with a simple Google search of:

“Health benefits of _______ essential oil”

Just fill in the blank of the essential oil you’re looking up.

Keep in mind essential oils are the highest quality oil vs aroma therapy oils.

Essential oils are used to benefit both mental and physical health. Aroma oils are not. Aroma oils are made with chemical ingredients.

Always make sure the oils you want to use can be applied to the skin.

Once fully blended, I use a spoon to transport the lotion from the bowl into my glass jars.

If you don’t have small jars, you can also use small glass food containers.

These lotions are fully edible.

They’re that safe.

I use my lotions as a head-to-toe lotion.

I use it in my beard as well.

I play around with the essential oils for both benefits and scent.

Before Bed

I also like to make a PM formula for before bed.

I add more lavender to this one but I also add magnesium powder. I tend to put this more so on my feet and calves for the magnesium absorption, with just a light layer on my face, hands, and arms to get the calming scent of the lavender.

The magnesium is a little gritty so I treat it as a mild exfoliate.

Note: The magnesium powder does not taste good so be careful where you use it. I don’t recommend using it on the lips or on private areas for your partners’ sake.

TL;DR

Tallow Lotion Recipe

  • 1 Cup plus a little extra, Fresh Tallow
  • ¼ Cup Avocado Oil or Coconut Oil
  • 20–40 Drops in total of essential oils
  • Optional: Using a hand mixer, blend until light and airy
  • Spoon into glass containers

Remember this is a general guideline, you can experiment with your ratios to find the consistency and blends that work best for you.

Sunscreen

You can even make your own natural sunscreen by adding zinc to the formula.

Some people also add a little beeswax to their sunscreens to help create a water barrier.

It’s no secret Tallow is great for the skin in a number of use-cases.

It’s also no secret that conventional sunscreens are a toxic mish-mash of chemicals scientifically shown to harm our health and the environment.

I don’t want to bore you with the details, but just look up Avobenzone, Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Homosalate, Octocrylene and their potentially nasty effects on the environment, and your hormones.

From allergies, to hormone disruption, from free radical generation to coral reef damage!

It’s clear many conventional sunscreen ingredients might provide more harms than benefits.

Start treating your skin with the respect it deserves by giving it the nutrition it needs.

It works with all skin types and can even be beneficial for skin rashes, diaper rash, and even eczema and psoriasis.

It gets absorbed into your skin pretty quickly so it won’t leave you feeling greasy but will leave you feeling soft and smooth.
