Happy birthday to us! The Metakey is 1 year old this week, and what a year it’s been. Join us a moment, as we reflect on the milestones past and the bright future ahead…
April 12th 2021 — our first tweet, a twinkle in Matty’s eye…
An auspicious day and the beginning of a grand journey.
Shortly after this moment we launched our Discord — a meeting place for the hungriest and most curious adventurers in the Metaverse. A few weeks of restless inspiration later, and…
May 5th at 5.54am AEDT a legend was born.
The Edition 1 Key “Genesis” with art by the talented Alan Bolton was launched.
Roughly 20 minutes later… we sold all 500 keys.
And so 750 Edition 2 “RTFKT” keys were launched — with art by RTFKT Studios
The next day we uploaded our first ever YouTube Video. Watching it really highlights just how far we have pushed utility and interoperability in just one year!
It took us roughly 6 weeks to sell out of Edition 2 (which if you know the floor price now is especially astonishing). We also held a giveaway for our Key-holders of an Oculus Quest Headset to celebrate!
June 24th 2021 — we launched our Edition 3 “Ultimate” Metakey designed by Melbourne Artist Marc0matic. This was the last of our “collectors’ editions” Keys and marks the entry of our exclusive Key Masters tier(holders of Editions 1–3).
Also in June — RTFKT Alien Mars Sneakers wearables dropped to all Key-holders; an official licensed Sir Jackie Stewart DCL helmet; and an acquisition of Key-holder-generated art for the Metakey vault.
July 1st 2021 saw the release of our first Captain’s Log . These have become an essential vehicle for community updates and more than a few strategic alpha serves over the past year…
Another first in July was the launch of this Medium Blog — another essential avenue for community updates. It has become a cornerstone of every launch, partnership and collaboration, and integral to educating and onboarding new Key-holders.
July also marks the Metakey’s acquisition of 80 LAND parcels in Decentraland. We have BIG plans for this massive space, some of which you may have seen come to fruition, and a lot more that is to come!
We also acquired 576 parcels of LAND in The Sandbox for games and experiences, some of which you can look forward to learning about very soon!
Both of these LAND acquisitions mark were crucial in securing a future of interoperability between the most popular Metaverse spaces.
Through July we also began collaborations with innovators like CyberKongz, Alison Wonderland and Curio NFT… AND ran more giveaways for Key-holders including a Nintendo Switch!
August 2021 — launch of the Metakey Shark Tank, aplace for Key-holders to pitch their Web 3 projects for the chance to earn grants and parse valuable feedback and insights from experts in the space. It was also the first building on our land plot in Decentraland! The Shark Tank is currently being revamped, if you would like to pitch your own idea in future you can fill out this form.
August also marked the launch of the Metakademy — our curated video database of empowering and education web3 content.

At the end of August, the Metakey acquired 600m2 of LAND in Somnium Space .
30th September 2021 the release of Edition 4 — the Captain!
Designed by the talented JmarinoVfx and our largest release to date with 7500 Keys forged, Edition 4 sold out in just 20 minutes.
September also produced the Metakey DAO, facilitating streamlined and inclusive decision-making for our Key-holders. Our first decision — the acquisition of an asteroid from Influence — a play-to-earn space strategy MMO.
Collaborations in September included Hexarchia, Dystopunks, Galaxy Fight Club and PaperD. We also held a film screening in our Shark Tank (The Wave starring Justin Long and Donald Faison) with a Q&A from the film creators for our friends in the BYOPills community.
This brings us to October 2021 — another month of firsts. We introduced our NFT-Research discord channels, in which daily alpha is posted for our Key-holders by research wizard Pat AKA Saucy.
We also hosted the VIP experience for the first Metaverse Festival — a massive three day music event hosted in Decentraland and headlined by the likes of Paris Hilton, DeadMau5 and Alison Wonderland. The Metakey VIP access included exclusive artist hangouts and super-rare VIP swag.
The most anticipated point of October came with the launch of https://www.metakrew.com/ where we officially announced our launch of the Metakrew — “your identity in the Metaverse”
October’s collabs included Whale Shark, Cryptowalkers, Drp.io and The Vogu! We also distributed $100k AUD out to 5 different Australian charities, decided by the Metakey DAO.
November 19th — launch of the Metakrew mint: Key-holders began to mint their Krewmates!
November included another dense list of collaborations and giveaways from names like The Red Village, Big Time, Guild of Guardians, CGU, Rengoku and Faceless Avatars (to name a few), alongside another session of the Metakey Shark Tank!
Edition 2 Holders were also airdropped an RTFKT Mintdisc token, enabling them to take part of the RTFKT CloneX presale…
December 3rd — reveal of the Metakrew!
To celebrate the release we held a Metakrew Fan Art contest, with so many amazing contributions . The first prize was swept up by Suika’s electric Revenant portrait.
We also announced partnerships with Habbo NFT, World Wide Web, DAZE India, Unstoppable Domains and Sipher. All Edition 4 Holders also had a chance for an exclusive 1/1 giveaway from Jmarino VFX.
Kicking off January 2022 — our exclusive partnership with the AO Metaverse, covering the Australian Open and their unprecedented use of NFT’s in sports! This activation dropped exclusive Key-holder wearables, an early-minting opportunity to 50% of the collection’s total supply, and daily community streams packed with highlights and celebrity guests throughout the Open.
We also came together with Voxodeus and Ethermon, with still more Key-holder exclusive drops.
February 2022 delivered another big splash over in Decentraland, with the arrival of our Metakey Headquarters!
Our HQ includes exclusive Key-holder gated areas and facilities for streams and parties! To celebrate we held a launch party with holder-exclusive wearables and premiered the latest Captains Log #9 where we first leaked the alpha for our upcoming game release — New Ganymede.
February also marked collaborations with Metamundo and Metazone which came with another free airdrop for all Key-holders, and a live meet up at NFT-Melbourne.
March madness had us collaborate with talent like Nametag (free Nametag for all Holders) and Marc0matic dropped iconic, free DCL wearables to Edition 3 Holders.
Another live event appearance saw Matty and Michael holding panels at Blockchain Week and delivering swag to Key-holders in attendance thanks to Tokenproof.
We also teased some eye-catching Metakey merch, in partnership with Uniqly!
Despite this plethora of value props, we had been flying in relative stealth-mode for some core developments up to April 2022…
April partnerships featured NFT-Nerds, Genies and Everyrealm: each bringing fresh opportunities for our Key-holders. We also launched the ‘Historical’ NFT Wearable drop with My Curio Cards, PixelMap and Mooncats.
April also marked the launch of the NFT-Buzz website, making it even easier for everyone to keep up with the essential news across Web3.
We also gave https://themetakey.com/ a phenomenal makeover to reflect our new vision and trajectory!
The biggest announcement of April 2022 that you just may have heard of: the successful closing of our seed round — raising $3.5 million for the Metakey from some key investors selected for their potential value-add to our burgeoning products and ecosystem.
May 2022 — we may be celebrating our first birthday, but you won’t catch us slacking.
The curtain has risen on the first gameplay teaser trailer for New Ganymede. We also kickstarted our New Ganymede Dev Logs with Billy and Michael, where they will regularly update us on everything that is happening with the development of our immersive social and gaming hub.
We hope you have enjoyed the amazing journey that the Metakey has taken so far. It has been a wild and ever-evolving ride; we have loved every second of it (and we hope you have too).
