When we first started discussing Metronome, it was an abstract–an ideal for what we thought cryptocurrency could and should be. We all felt strongly about what characteristics a built-to-last currency should have. It should be self-governing, it should be portable, it should be enduring, and it should be built for fairness.
Given the time we’ve been involved in the crypto world, we’ve had a lot of time and experience to observe its growth and transformation. We’ve fully immersed ourselves in this community since the earliest of days and there are a lot of lessons we’ve learned along the way.
As we saw more and more cryptocurrencies with different characteristics launch (e.g., limited supply, uncertain issuance models, long settlement times) we asked ourselves whether those currencies were truly sustainable over the long term — truly built-to-last. Our inspiration for Metronome was to take all these lessons into account, starting with a clean slate and building the best cryptocurrency we could. We aimed to build the next generation of smart money for the next 500 or 1,000 years — something that will last well into the future.
But trying to build the best cryptocurrency is no easy task, especially when you only have one chance to get it right. We had to take every crypto-economic and technical lesson over the last several years into account, including structure, self-governance, and cross-chain portability features. We engaged four security auditors to extensively verify our engineering, work through any bugs and test multiple scenarios. In addition to these thorough security audits, we also engaged with knowledgeable legal and tax advisors. We invested heavily upfront to build a cryptocurrency that is easy for our community — current and future — to use.
This is an exciting moment. We’ve been amazed at the energy and positivity from this community. Cryptocurrency has given us the opportunity to challenge our assumptions of what money is and how it could behave. But what may be most inspiring, is it nods to what money should be — independent, mobile, and empowering.
Metronome’s launch is only the beginning of what is possible. While progress still needs to be made in order for cryptos to transform the future of money, we believe we are taking steps in the right direction. We are proud of the steps we have taken today, and welcome the steps still yet to come.
