Yankees Acquire Sonny Gray from Oakland Athletics

As a regional vice president for Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Michael “Mike” Melville of Novato, California, oversees all operations at Bay Area airports. Although he resides in Novato, Mike Melville is an avid fan of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) New York Yankees.

As of the July 31 trade deadline, the Yankees sat atop the American League (AL) East division with a win-loss record of 57–47. To bolster its odds of winning the division for the first time in five years, New York dealt top prospects Dustin Fowler, Jorge Mateo, and James Kaprielian to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for 27-year-old starting pitcher Sonny Gray. Earlier in the week, the Yankees added veteran starting pitcher Jamie Garcia.

Gray, meanwhile, posted a 6–5 record and a 3.43 earned run average (ERA) in 16 starts this year with the Athletics. A third-place finisher in the 2015 AL Cy Young Award voting, he owns a career record of 44–36 to go along with a 3.42 ERA in 112 career starts. He makes $3.75 million and is under club control until the 2019 off-season.
