It took me 24 years to read a non-fiction book all the way through.
I wish I had started sooner.
Rewiring years of negative and limited thinking is no easy task. Your mind has formed habits that are deeply engraved in your neural pathways and even when you begin to see life in a new way, the old ways of thinking will haunt you.
You cannot put a price on things that rewire the mind. People pay a lot of money for coaches, shrinks, and booze but in my personal journey, it was books that saved me.
The best habit I have ever developed is to read consistently. It is a time to step away, shut out the noise, shut off the screen and be still.
Even if I listen to an audio tape of a book, I have to buy the physical copy. There is just something about holding a book, bending it in your hands and losing yourself in the thoughts of an author who spilled his or her life out onto the pages for you.
I like to highlight and write in them. Things that impress me or make me think, things I want to come back to and research later.
I often think that if my house was burning down, my books would be the first thing I would try to save ( Don’t worry, I don’t own a cat ).
I read many books in 2016 but the following 6 I would like to recommend to you. They will change your life.
1. “Think & Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill
I read this book in 2016 but I have to admit, it was for the fourth time. I read it 4 years ago when I first started out on my journey of trying to find a purpose for my life. This book will make you rethink everything you know about your thoughts and the effects they have on your life.
There are many “keys to success” but they all start with how you think. It will force you to take an inventory of the way you thought before.
2. “Stay Alive All Your Life” by Norman Vincent Peale
I heard a speech by Norman on YouTube that was recorded from a few years before his passing. A hilarious old man. Hearing his talk allowed me to read the book with the sound of his actual voice inside my head. He had so much life in him up to the last years of his life.
This man truly stayed alive ALL of his life and his enthusiasm is contagious. This book will light a fire under your ass for life like none other.
3. “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Steven R. Covey
Steven Covey breaks down personal development to a science. As he goes through the habits, he dives deep into each one giving specific steps to follow for change. From him I learned the necessity of being intentional about the quality of your life.
Action is everything, you don’t grow if you don’t act on the things you learn. This book allowed me to develop a roadmap for my life by taking baby steps.
4. “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle
Eckhart taught me how to be still and chill. I have never been able to separate myself from my thoughts as simply as I do now. Separating from our idea of who we are in this world according to the ego and letting things be.
We like to pretend that what others think of us has no effect on us but let’s be real, we put a lot of weight into how we are perceived. This book has allowed me to understand the dangers of ego like never before.
5. “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George Samuel Clason
The best advice on wealth I have ever read. If you live paycheck to paycheck, read this book. If you make a lot of money, read this book. This book alone has allowed me to develop habits that I have tried to create for a very long time.
6. “Talk Like TED” by Carmine Gallo
We are all speakers. No matter what business or career path you choose, we all tell stories. Carmine Gallo interviewed all of the T.E.D speakers with the most viewed talks and gives amazing insight into what holds people’s attention, what inspires people, and what makes people listen to you.
From a stay at home mommy raising her kids to the president of the United States, we impact people by the way we communicate. Each and every one of us has a story to tell and this book will teach you how to tell it.
Reading these books alone will blow your mind but applying the many principles taught in them will change your life.
There is a better way to live!
Thank you for reading! I also write and speak in hopes of inspiring folks to seek and find the most out of this short life (HERE) :)
