What will be the OS of the Future?
How the AI cloud manifests at the human interface, will be the OS of the future.
From how it spawns voice-AI that will become more ubiquitous than mobile smartphones are today. This is because humans crave convenience and and the embedded IoT cloud AI won’t depend on our thumbs, apps and notifications to get our attention.
According to the MIT Technology Review the enterprise AI of the future is also the Cloud of the future. Amazon, Microsoft, Alibaba, Google, Salesforce, IBM, Cloudify, Oracle, the list just goes on.
In truth this new OS, is a neural net in the true sense of what a smart operating system might be. It will encompass the smart grid, the internet of things and the convergence of Big Data, AI, machine learning itself modulated by smart contracts on the blockchain, a high quality sharing economy, decentralized nodes where additive manufacturing and robotics serve the needs of the planet in fully sustainable ecosystems.
In that world, the proprietary OS does not belong to just one company like Amazon, Tencent, Alibaba or Alphabet, but a harmonized whole where enterprise solutions work together with new models of how human beings will merge, interact and live with AI fully embedded in all that we do. In such a world, we’ll still be human but fully augmented by AI. Every industry, every country, every human activity will be optimized by elements of artificial intelligence. In 2018, we can already imagine this occuring with the advent of self-driving cars, and things like logistic and retail becoming more automated. We’ll witness this with the cost barrier of space travel coming down, and how we colonize Mars and explore other worlds.
The convergence of all of these technological trends will fit into a whole that will be an OS for the entire world. The OS of the future will be solution agnostic and serve all human beings, it will arise out of the best enterprise level solutions and yet end up transcending its corporate origins. In 2018, we are starting to get an glimmer of what that might feel like with consumer ecosystems such as Amazon, WeChat and Alibaba totally transforming and our digital and customer experience. These solutions that we are witnessing coming out of China and the U.S. are the very basis of how the future OS will work.
The OS of the future goes beyond public cloud providers or walled garden ecosystems that are dependent upon Advertizing revenue as a source of profit. In the future, AI in the form of the voice-interface will be universal. In 2018, Google Home is learning many new languages, Alexa can speak english with different accents and voice assistants and their associated skills and routines are quickly differentiating and multiplying. The OS of the future is the future of search, experience, connection and consumerism. AI guiding and empowering our choices, at every step of our interaction with groups, communities, products and businesses.
The winning OS of the future will be the most rigorous servitor of the human experience in the broadest sense. Amazon’s obsession with being customer-centric, Tencent’s obliteration of how useful an app can be with WeChat, Google’s deep learning ability to solve real world problems with AI combined with quantum computing, the blockchain and other important advances as they come along all integrated into a seamless AI-human hybrid journey.
We know that AI could will double the size of the $260 billion cloud market in coming years. We know that the Cloud is the key, to the convergence that will inevitably take place. In such a world and soon, artificial intelligence will be everywhere. It will be the connective tissue of all that matters to us. 5G will be even more immediate, and everything from payments to predictive analytics will be seamless. Apps will be more powerful and our ability to harness AI for social entrepreneurship will be more meaningful.
The OS of the future will simultaneously imprison us in a sea of data and liberate us with almost too much choice in many new paths of our ability to lead fulfilling lives that have a positive impact upon the world. The OS of the future will personalize our experience in ways that make the algorithms of today look prehistoric and insultingly blind.
The OS of the future will mean living in a world where AI enables automation of many tasks, services and routines which used to be done by humans.
All advances of technology bring new solutions, new convenience and new problems along with them. AI is already changing how we define our humanity and how we relate not only to each other but to our institutions, and our very notions of experience, and the blending of our digital attention with our physical lives.
With the OS of the future, our personal assistants will become omnipresent and able to personalize paths to fulfilment and help us be ourselves better (as idealistic as this may sound). As smartphones changed where we place our attention, smart personal assistants change how we organize our real physical time and optimize our own cognition, emotions and motivation.
Imagine everyone had a smart and capable executive personal secretary with the computing power of today’s supercomputers? That’s in a gist, what it will feel like to live with the operating system of the future.
