All it takes is one new habit

How to make a lasting change and get what you want

I can’t believe how time flew. It is July already and like many it’s time to take stock and see how far we’ve come. Is there anything, just one thing, we can tick off our new year’s resolution list? Hopefully there is for you. For me, I’d like to grin massively and say YES! I don’t know what it was. It may have been the fact that I will be turning the big four o in about 18 months. I had set myself a few monstrous goals in the beginning of the year. I wasn’t sure if it will be another case of one step forward, twenty steps back. But this time it was different. Well, I did a few things differently.

I had written down my goals. One of them was to get more active. I have always been conscious about my weight. I erred on the chubby side of average. I was active before. I would go around the block a few times in the evenings after work. It felt good, but I wasn’t measuring it and sometimes a month would go by and I realized that I haven’t put on my running shoes. I also felt guilty taking the time out in the evenings. I was already getting home after dark most days. So I decided to start going to the gym in the mornings. We had to be on the road to school by 06h45 so I had to get up really early. I set my alarm for 4h30am. I wasn’t sure how I was going to make it. The first day was easy, well it was exciting because I was getting to the gym just after 05h00 as the doors opened. All the die hards were there. Their muscles bulging and the women looked like they had a beauty treatment somewhere around midnight!

Anyway, I had my new gym tracks playlist ready and on the treadmill I went. I was amazed at how quickly the hour passed. I was feeling good as I drove back home. I could actually get used to this. The next morning at 04h30 I felt tired and my muscles were sore. Maybe I should take a rest day. But I asked myself if it’s going to be just like all the other times. Thankfully my desire for change was greater. I went for four days the first week. I told myself that an average of four out of seven days were ok. I didn’t have to go every single day, because that’s when you lose motivation. After a few months of doing my morning exercises, I am happy to say that I am in better shape than I’ve been for years.

I’ve also started to keep a journal. I don’t write in it every day, but I do every few days. I’ve also been tracking my expenses, by actually writing them down. Like you, I’ve heard it all before. But, by taking the next step, these good actions snowball into a positive lifestyle and one you can be proud of. I know how it feels to be failing. I had to close my business’ doors after two years of operation. In hindsight there are a lot of things I could’ve done differently. Next time though.

Are you better off than you were a year ago? If the answer is no, then start drawing up a plan of how you are going to change that. Don’t wait another day. Because another year will go past with nothing to show. And you can’t live like that. It demotivates you and there really is no time. Our circumstances are not the same and you may actually be going through a difficult time. However, I can guarantee you that if you want lasting change, start with one positive daily action. It will motivate you to do more and by becoming more positive, you will start to change your overall mindset and things may not appear to be so bad after all. You may actually look back and say I did it!
