Burkini Ban Equals Islamophobia?

In the article, “Sexist Burkini Ban Based on Islamophobia, Not Secularism”, Lisbeth Latham, published on August 26, 2016, in the Green Left Weekly, she reports that Islamophobia is a vast growing issue in France. Latham first acknowledges that those who are supporting the burkini ban only do so with the justification that it is a step forward in the women’s right movement; however, the ban only widens the gap toward the acceptance of cultural difference. Then Latham goes on to explain with the current misconception of people correlates the burkini with a religious symbol; therefore, creating a cultural paradigm among Islamic society. Towards the end of her article, Lathan points out by allowing the burkini ban to persist it legitimizes the targeting a certain group of people, hence, increasing levels of Islamophobia.

Almost anyone can publish anything on the web making harder determine the reliability and credibility of the website though objectivity, authority, and accuracy. At first glance, Green Left Weekly seems trustworthy by the simple “.org”. Even though the website seems credible, the lack of hyperlinks in , “Sexist Burkini Ban Based on Islamophobia, Not Secularism”, discloses some unreliability if the formation given is accurate. Regardless of that, the author offers accurate information and overall contribute to the network’s goal of divulging news and ideas another media won’t present.

Objectivity behind the Network and Article

Lisbeth Lathan an author of Green Left Weekly, which is to inform the public audience by given the facts and statements from a topic not talked about. Even as going far a setting the topic in a way that presents both sides and fact checks both arguments. This gives the audience another side of the argument and lets the readers use that new information they are rarely given. This is an informative site and the audience is anyone interested and following the current topic of the burkini ban. This post is to enlighten the readers on another side of the argument with no string attached like political agendas, or for views.

Latham does use accurate information and present both sides of the argument, but you can infer that she has chosen a side by the title of the article, “Sexist Burkini Ban Based on Islamophobia, Not Secularism”. This article is clear on its intentions and does not pretend to be biased. Lastly, Lathan acknowledges her personal advocacy vs. fact. The first eleven paragraph are factual and the other sixteen are personal argument backed with facts.

Authority of the author?

Though the article does have an author and does prove a hyperlink; however, it fails to give an information about the author, Lisbeth Lathan qualifications to write on this topic. It only offers another article written by her and

“[Lisbeth Latham maintains Revitalizing Labo[u]r, which follows the labo[u]r movement internationally and is following the events in France]”.

The lack of information about the author is alarming a quick search on Facebook yielded great information. Lisbeth Latham, transwomen, feminist, unionist writer. Studied at Murdoch University 2001 to 2011, then in UOW Alumni on 2000, then in a class of 1998 from Curtin University Psychology. The author is qualified to write on the topic because of the years of study she has done as well she has studied around the world and places in which she has written about. Latham has the cultural background and the field of expertise as she has been writing for more than 15 years. She has both professional and personal contact information give example, Twitter, Tumblr, and email.

Is it Accurate?

As stated in the objectivity of the author Lathan does prove accurate information; nevertheless, there is a lack of hyperlinks. There is no list or link to the reputable sources to check for accurate information. For example, she mentions

“the uniform of extremist Islamism, not of the Muslim religion”.

With a quick search on the web on is able to check is accuracy as the NYTimes, CBSNews, and the DNA (Daily News & Analysis) cover it. There are no hyperlinks, yet as the reader, you are able to check her information for credibility. The content and material are accurate; however, most are in the French language.

The URL is .org given a stance that it’s an organization but also has .au which mean the domain is in Australia. Furthermore, although there was a lack of hyperlink it did not affect the accuracy of the content the author gave. Overall, GreenLeft Weekly is a consistent and credible source.
