I Listened to “Everything is Awesome” for 1 Hour. Nonstop.

I finally saw The Lego Movie about a month ago. It’s a great movie, but one thing that stuck with me was the song “Everything is Awesome.” I’ve been listening to it every now and then. But today, I decided to listen to the hour-long version.

I was at work, so I documented my progress on Slack. Below is a rough timeline of that fateful hour.

Minute 4: Everything is awesome, and this song is amazing. I can’t imagine this being a bad idea.

Minute 16: Everything still awesome.

Minute 27: I’m starting to think that this was a mistake.

Minute 31: There’s a moment after the song ends and as it’s starting up again when I want to turn it off. But then the singing starts and the optimism wins me back and I continue listening.

Minute 39: A few months ago, a guy decided to listen to ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” on repeat during his weekly 4-hour drive to visit his girlfriend. I’ve gained a lot of sympathy for him in the past 20 minutes.

Minute 42: They say that you should never become roommates with a friend. It’ll be a lot of fun at first, but soon you won’t be able to stand them. This experiment is like a microcosm of that.

Minute 45: Everything is awesome again.

Minute 46: That might have been Stockholm syndrome setting in.

Minute 52: I really need a bathroom break but I’m only 10 minutes away from the end and I’m not giving up now (the video is actually 62 minutes long).

Minute 59: Somehow, my enjoyment of this song is back to where it was when I started listening.

Minute 62: DONE! I made it all the way through. A part of me actually wishes that there was one more play-through because I want to hear the song again. But the rest of me is glad that there isn’t.

Minute 92: It’s been over for half an hour and the song is still stuck in my head. I’m still getting flashbacks.
