I’m not sure this is true, but I guess it depends on who the “we” here is. There are plenty of people in the western world — millions, even — who don’t have the means to do much of anything other than survive. Maybe they can serve their children so they can perhaps escape poverty, but the data shows that poverty tends to be passed on for several generations.
