The Future of Business
One of the important roles of a marketer, or anyone in the business space for that matter, is to be able to look ahead and see what is on the horizon. To take calculated risks based on this information and execute or reevaluate based on the outcome.
Right now we are living in a social media world. Everything is right at our fingertips and being personal is crucial for a brand today.
But what does the long game hold? What type of market is right around the corner that we need to keep an eye on. Here’s my thoughts on what the future holds.
- Apple Watch
Personally I don’t have one (yet) and the reason why is the watch is a cool way to get your notifications and quickly respond to a text in a meeting ……. and that’s it, for now. An I don’t need that. I don’t need to be interrupted more than I already am. An if I’m in a meeting I’m focused on that meeting and I will get the text afterwards.
Now that that is off my chest here’s why the Apple Watch is just the beginning of the future. First, it’s a sign that consumers want things even faster. The watch just saved us the trouble of taking our phone out of our pocket. It’s the convenience of not having to reach into our pockets every time we want to check our text or tweets.
Being able to use your Apple Watch to open your hotel door, open and start your car, and pay for your Grande Frappuccino at Starbucks with just a flick of the wrist. That functionality is very intriguing and will change up the marketplace dramatically.
Aside from the functionality, what the Apple Watch means for businesses is something my agency, No-Comply Designs, and I have been thinking a lot about. Simply because it creates a new touch point for a consumer to experience the brand. Tinder is already experimenting with that.
2. 3D Printing
A little while ago a man took a 3D printer and made a functional gun with it and it shocked everyone. 3D printers have been around for a while, but I don’t think they have really seen the light yet. Imagine being able to just print out a plate for dinner, or print out a dollhouse for your daughter. A lot of companies are going to be disrupted by 3D printers, if they become something commonly seen in the household.

3. Any Company that Becomes the Middleman
Look what is Facebook? Aside from a way to interact with your friends, it’s a news site that doesn’t report any of the news. They just offer a middleman platform, and let others do the work.
How about Uber? They are a taxi company that doesn’t have any taxis. Or Airbnb, they are a hotel company with no hotels.
All these companies do is they connect people, with services, to people that need those services, that’s it. Those types of companies will be the companies that will be successful in the future. The best part is that most industries can be disrupted with that business model.
Of course there will be other things that come in and alter the way people market and run businesses, but for now those are the ones that will clearly change the market.
