Primordial Sound Meditation (PSM)
There is a time you cannot remember, but it is one that we all share. As we all lie in the womb, we experienced the sound of our mother’s beating heart. This sound gave us our first sense of relaxation and harmony. At the exact moment of birth, the Universe spoke a single word and gave that word to us.This word is your mantra. It is Sanskrit for ‘mind instrument.’ Learning your unique mantra is key to beginning Primordial Sound Mediation (PSM).
Before we really get to the fundamentals of PSM, we need to first dispel some myths about mediation. PSM is not about contorting the body into impossible shapes, burning incense or listening to eastern music. Thoughts are important in PSM. You should be actively thinking — something that seems to be completely against the idea of mediation. Those thoughts, specifically the points between thoughts, are where you need to place your mantra until the distances between thoughts grow larger and larger.
This is where you will find how PSM works. You will eventually find peace and harmony in your mediation and finding it will be easier and easier. PSM is not about the arrival at a point but the journey. It is not going to happen overnight, but it will happen. The best way to start is with a timer — short intervals — and increase the time appropriately.
Chances are you will not be able to find your mantra independently. You will need the assistance of an instructor, a qualified one, trained in the art from the Chopra Center. Deepak Chopra, M.D. is an authority on alternative medicine in addition to western medical training.
Welcome; enjoy your path and take peace in knowing you will become a better you in time.
