“Never forget that only the dead fish swim with the stream.”

- Malcolm Muggeridge

Normal isn’t a standard, it’s a mere perception. A term used to define what’s commonly seen or experienced. Psychologically, Normal is defined as conformance to an average. And yet, it has become the social standard. A comfort zone. Indeed, ignorance is bliss.

But, from early days on, we’re taught to go with the flow. To do what everyone else does. To act like everyone else does. To be like everyone else. Anyone, who doesn’t conform to these rules, are branded rebels. Misfits. Crazy. As John Green beautifully put, “Here’s what’s not beautiful about it: from here, you can’t see the rust or the cracked paint or whatever, but you can tell what the place really is. You see how fake it all is. It’s not even hard enough to be made out of plastic. It’s a paper town.” We’re doing things, because that’s what everyone else is doing. And that’s how we were taught to. We are molded into the society’s norms. And we find ourselves putting on a mask, a charade, just to fit into that mold. And somewhere along the way, we loose that fire within us.

We become fakes.

But the fish aren’t supposed to swim with the flow, they’re supposed to swim against it. Then why don’t anyone break the mold?

Because going with the flow is easy.

It’s risk free. It’s predictable. The end result has already been tested and proven. And breaking free, often means standing alone. It not only takes a great deal of courage, but the path ahead is unknown, and unexplored. It’s scary. You can’t look around for affirmations or proof, because it’s different for every single soul that walks it. The end result isn’t definitive, it’s unpredictable.

“Do not imitate what’s popular for acceptance, do what’s authentic for the sake of your soul.”

- Brendon Burchard

Your soul, is as distinct and unique as your fingerprint. And like a wild bird, it’s supposed to wander freely. Yes, challenges shall rise. There may be moments where you can’t see what’s ahead. It’s by facing that darkness, struggling through those challenges, will it grow strong. Once you push through those challenges, through that phase of darkness, and rise up, you’d know what it’s like to be free, physically, and mentally.

Normal, is overrated. That’s what everyone’s trying so hard to be. Trying to blend in, would be the cruelest thing you can do to your own soul.

In the magical words of Osho, Don’t choose the comfortable, the respectable, socially acceptable. Choose what rings a bell in your heart.

Rebel, till you break free.

Be a voice, not an echo.

Be Original.
