100 DAYS WRITING CHALLENGE

Day Eighteen

A discussion ensued in my room on a particular night, among my roommates, it was about a lecturer and his principle, which was that no lady is allowed to put on trousers to his class. These roommates of course, agreed to his opinion with the comment that, "He doesn't like it, that's all".

Well, I wasn't particularly surprised to see them fully support the lecturer's principle, since they were ladies who do not put on trousers, or its equivalent, anyway. Since the regulation doesn't affect them, it's good to go.

Then, I asked them, intruding into their discussion, "if the lecturer had said, no one is allowed to wear skirt to his class, would they still be able to support that motion by saying "He doesn't like it, that's all"? Of course, they wouldn't say that! They would form a strong divergence, raise placards and start up another babel, simply because this time, the motion works not in their own favour. And funnily, at that time, when this new regulation is set, those who see the evolvement of trousers as a positive invention, would maintain an absurd form of tranquillity. What a tragedy.

How many times have we done the same? Since the conditions favour us, whoever is at loss be damned, but when we are on the side of the disadvantaged, we inquire "where's the struggle at?" You, yes you! Come off it, it's an unacceptable and rather self centered manner of living. It doesn't matter whether you're directly affected, indirectly affected or not even affected at all, what matters most is that, "are some people affected?" "Are the poor ones being oppressed?" "Does it restrain the rights of some persons?" "Is it right?". These questions should be your driving force, and never whether you are affected or not.

The bottom line of my speech is that when we come to the full realization that "all hands on deck" means "all hands", and not " all affected hands", then, we can make greater effects.
