Desktop Website vs Mobile Website
Focus on mobile.

Even in today’s world some businesses don’t have a website. That’s right, no website. They are not even worth talking about because in 2017 and in the years to come because they do not matter. Smart phones are dominating consumer attention, so much so that if you have a 10/10 desktop site and only a 5/10 mobile site, you will lose. As smart phones continue to dominate with no signs of slowing down, it is crucial for your business to adapt.
As time passes, the amount of people consuming content through their smartphones is rapidly increasing. Look around you, wherever you may be reading this, people are glued to their smart phones, and it’s not just millennials either. A study conducted by Yahoo in 2016 revealed that 79% of Generation X are using smartphones. This is expected to increase to 88% by 2018. This is a significant statistic and as a business owner you should be taking notice of. If you haven’t bothered to update your website to make it mobile compatible, you’re in trouble.

Many people are still not taking smart phones seriously. They view them as these devices that the youth of today are using to text each other or to communicate through social media.
People have always had their heads buried in various forms of content. In the early day’s newspapers dominated, then came along the radio, then the television and now we have the smart phone and social media. Less and less people are tuning into the news because its available at their fingertips. There is no need to turn the news on at 7pm because why would they? We can simply consume that content whenever we like. Not only can we consume it whenever we feel like it, we can also skip the things that don’t interest us.
“The mobile device is now the television, and the television is now the radio” — Gary Vaynerchuk
This means that we are living in the greatest shift in attention since the television was introduced and overtook the radio. Some of the biggest social media platforms on the planet now are Snapchat and Instagram. Both mobile based sites. 90% of Facebooks active users consume content through their mobiles devices. This is mind blowing considering Facebook was a desktop based site to begin with. However they didn’t waste much time, in 2007, three years after it’s official launch Facebook announced they would be introducing mobile support and have reaped the rewards since.
There is no doubt that there is still a significant number of people using their computers to consume content and i am not saying to abandon it. There will still be people viewing your website through their computers, but as time goes on that number is decreasing while mobile phones are rapidly increasing. In January 2016, 20% of people consumed content through their mobile phones. One year later that number has spiked to 50%. Ask yourself, what would you rather give up? Your computer or your mobile phone?

Therefore, it is essential that companies and businesses take the time to focus on the importance of their mobile site. I cannot stress this enough. A lot more people will view your website through their smartphones than they will through their computers. Let me put this into perspective. A manager might be waiting for you as a client to show up to lunch for a meeting to discuss business. While the manager is waiting, he might jump on his smartphone and want to further investigate your business. He goes onto your site and he has a hard time navigating through it and this frustrates him and could change the whole complex of the meeting. You may have had an exemplary desktop site to begin with, but you may never get the chance to showcase that because of the first impression it made. Now flip this, if in that five-minute period, he is impressed with your website, there is a higher chance the direction of the meeting could swing in your favour.
Wherever you are, your smart phone is by your side. With that comes all your social media platforms, friends, family, business, you name it. The attention they generate is almost unbelievable. I have seen people in meetings with their phones on the table and once they get a notification, you can instantly see the shift in attention.
It is fundamental that you have a brilliant mobile website to showcase for the consumer. First impressions are everything in today’s world. Ask yourself why billboards aren’t as powerful as they once were? It’s because the person sitting in the passenger seat is looking down at their smartphone while you drive past that very expensive billboard. Even the driver is on their phone driving past those billboards.
