I loved Midnight Special despite some issues I had with it. I’ve loved all Jeff Nichols’ movies. Michael Shannon is a fantastic actor but I feel he was miscast in this. He just doesn’t do empathy well. He does terrifying fantastically well. I feel like this, unfortunately, spells an end to his hope of a career as a leading man. He’s fantastic in supporting roles but a lead role: the audience has to be able to identify with the actor (something that was easy to do in Mud with McConaughey despite the fact he was playing a reprobate, McConaughey’s an actor with a lot of warmth and charm). Shannon was not helped by Edgerton. I don’t know who decided Edgerton was the next big thing, but he was awful in this and awful in Black Mass. He can’t do an American accent to save his life and he has the most off-putting face in the movies. I’m worried that Nichols’ next film Loving will be ruined by Edgerton. Honestly, Nichols should have cast McConaughey in both these films. I hope he’ll work with him again in the future. They were a perfect match… with Shannon in support playing the creepy guy!
