Thank you for writing this. I think that it’s so important for people to acknowledge social responsibility and kindness to a child, and teaching kindness TO your child, especially when it comes to other kids that are different, are so important. When my son asks questions about children that he sees that are “different”, I use it as a teachable moment and I explain to him that we ALL are different and that’s what makes us special. He’s so incredibly compassionate and caring — always the first to run to a friend when they’ve fallen and hurt themselves or if they’re having a bad day. I truly hope that when the day comes that he comes across a child like yours, that his compassion and caring remains in tact. I’m the person that tries to treat everyone and talk to everyone the same — I believe in the theory of treating the janitor the same as you do the CEO. It’s funny because the people that often get looked over always seemed a bit shocked that I speak and ask them how they’re doing and I know that it’s because they’re not used to it and I don’t *look* like the type of person that would do that (modelesque). Nonetheless, thank you again for sharing and I hope that one day, your daughter finds her place amongst friends because attaching to a life online can become a bit isolating. Sending love.
