Surfing the Vinyasa Flow
As my yoga instructor was describing a specific pose to us, and even though I didn’t catch the name, in gymnastics terms it is called a Bridge. ‘Oh phew… I can do one of those’ I thought to myself as I hoisted my body weight onto my arms and arched my back up towards the ceiling. From my upside down position I looked at the other participants. Most were lying on the floor in some other pose. ‘What! I did not know that was an option!’
I had chosen to attend Vinyasa Flow, and even though I explained I was at a beginner/intermediate level, my instructor suggested I should still attend. It was pretty intense and I think I got most of the moves. Unfortunately the breathing component was not up to pa, but I loved it and plan to attend every week. At the end of the class my instructor said ‘Yoga is compassion for life’ as she explained a yoga event she is running to raise money for a charity. It sounds like fun, so I’m in. However, in that moment I knew I had done the right thing by moving back to the Coast for a while. This is where I need to be and the philosophy of yoga confirmed it.
Which is good because I just bought a very expensive steamer and have taken a part time, possibly working to full time seeing how my body goes, job at a very cool school. The school sold me on their care and welfare for students and teachers, how they listened to their students and even followed through with a skate-area (cool beans), their culture, and the awesomeness of the students themselves. The school has a very cool vibe.
So the surf bum focus looks to be part time for now, but not forgotten. And Vinyasa Flow will definitely help with surf strength as today I can feel every muscle in my abdomen and upper chest… A consistent feeling for a while as I get into the groove of surf and yoga. Yeeew!
