Why We Need to Talk About Class at Work

This is a really important conversation to have. I work in the advertising industry and because one often has to have a low paid internship in a major city to get a job, it automatically limits the types of people who are able to enter the industry. Even if you live within commuting distance of a major city, you’d still forgo the potential higher salary of a summer job. Fortunately, now there are more rules around paid internships. But to be an art director or copywriter, one has to go to portfolio school, post bachelors degree. Overall, socio-economics needs to be discussed more in addition to race. I would even argue that those from similar economic backgrounds probably have more in common with each other than those from the same race.
