MissionDAO: Letter One

Is A Fully Transparent And Decentralised Mission-Giving Organisation Biblical?

Dear Beloved Friend,

Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

It’s such a pleasure to start this lovely correspondence with you on Medium. As with a majority of blockchain-based projects, we’ve adopted Medium as a platform to relay our thoughts and hearts to you.

This will be the first of many letters written to you and we are excited to begin this incredible journey together.

To start this all off — we are MissionDAO.

MissionDAO is the world’s first, fully transparent and decentralised mission fund. As an entity, we believe that the only solution to the human condition is Christ Jesus. To put it simply, we view ourselves as an extension of God’s love and desire to see souls saved through traditional and/or digital missions on earth and in the Metaverse.

Our mission is simple, but not easy: To Advance the Kingdom Of God (On Earth And In The Metaverse)

Through MissionDAO NFT art sales, we aim to fund traditional and digital missions for the furtherance of the gospel. A portion of it will be set aside for operational costs and supporting Christian businesses and artists.

In the following letters, we will talk about why we decided to utilise blockchain technology and create a DAO, and address our burning desire to expand into the Metaverse.

However, in this letter, we’ll share what the Lord has placed on our hearts regarding the MissionDAO

Is a fully transparent and decentralised mission-giving organisation biblical? Is this God’s will?

At the outset of a great undertaking like MissionDAO, it is important to us that we build something on the infallibility of God’s Word and we believe with all of our hearts that the Word of God is the absolute authority in our lives.

As such, let’s dive into the scriptures together to share with you what the Lord has placed on our hearts for such a time as this.

Decentralisation: New and Novel or Traditional and Time-Tested?

One lesson we learn early on in the scriptures is that God wants to be the King on the thrones of our hearts.

In Samuel 8, we find the nation of Israel asking God for a king — a centralised authority to rule over them.

In verse 7, we see that this displeased the Lord as He said to prophet Samuel:

“Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.”

Even David — the model king — failed.

When he ordered Uriah to the frontlines in a bid to keep Bathsheba for himself, it showed a lack of transparency and accountability, and the abuse of power entrusted to him to rule the nation.

Why was God displeased?

If the kings, prophets, and judges that ruled Israel have anything to teach us, it would be this — God was displeased simply because it was not His best for His people.

The New Covenant

So, what exactly does God want? What is His preferred system of organisation?

We find it revealed, but yet to be fulfilled in the book of Jeremiah.

Jeremiah 31:33–34 (NKJV)

But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

This is the beautiful reality as children of God — that we shall all know the Lord and hear His voice. And His will was only made possible through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. The finished work on the cross has cleansed us of our sins and made us righteous before God. Therefore, through the power of Christ that rests in us, we are a vessel for the Holy Spirit.

To put it simply, God wants us to be led by His Spirit! God wants His people to be attentive to the Holy Spirit that dwells in all of us.

Joel 2:28 (NKJV)

“And it shall come to pass afterward

That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;

Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

Your old men shall dream dreams,

Your young men shall see visions.

The will of God is put to action in the New Covenant. So let’s look at how this plays out in a Kingdom organisation by looking at the early Church.

Decision Making In The Early Church

One of the very first decisions that the early church made was to replace Judas. Did the first 11 come to a decision on their own? Let’s take a look to see how they came to a consensus.

‭‭Acts‬ ‭1:15–26 ‭(NKJV)

“And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.” (Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out. And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) “For it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘Let his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one live in it’; and, ‘Let another take his office.’ “Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.” And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.”‭‭

This passage tells us that the decision to replace Judas was a decentralised process. 120 disciples were involved, praying and deliberating, before deciding on Justus and Matthias. Then lots were cast before God for the final decision.

Let’s take a look at the next major decision the early church had to make next. Here in Acts 6, we see that the fold of disciples have multiplied greatly.

‭‭Acts‬ ‭6:1–3, 5–6‬ ‭(NKJV)‬‬

“Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business… And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them.”

The apostles showed consistency in their leadership and built a powerful and prayerful consensus-building culture. Whether it was choosing a replacement for Judas or appointing seven deacons to serve the tables, we see a bright and vibrant community eager to make important decisions together.

Closing Thoughts

As MissionDAO embarks on this exciting journey which involves funding traditional and digital missions, we want to build a community that prays, deliberates, and decides together.

The sad truth is that we live in a broken world with broken systems — nothing is perfect. Yet, as the Lord has used broken workmen for His holy work, it is our prayer that the Holy Spirit leads us from within to advance the Kingdom of God.

If you’ve made it to this point, we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We are strongly convicted that as the body of Christ — we are better together.

Proverbs 24:6 (NKJV)

“For by wise counsel you will wage your own war,

And in a multitude of counselors there is safety.”

Proverbs 15:22 (NKJV)

“Without counsel, plans go awry,

But in the multitude of counselors they are established.”

Proverbs 11:14 (NKJV)

“Where there is no counsel, the people fall;

But in the multitude of counselors there is safety”

Here’s to a new way of giving.

In the next letter, we’ll share our heart on why we decided to form a DAO on the blockchain. For now, do keep us in prayer.

To God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

With Love,
MissionDAO
