A teenager and I were boarding at a house for several days in a mining community. He got selected for swab tests of his coat and carry on bag, both set off the alarms. They asked where he had been staying – “Oh, that’s OK then, we know that he works with explosives so you likely picked up particles from him.” The other coach and I asked the agent about it, she said that almost all residents are likely to be positive at the airport at low levels. It generally clears in a day or so of being outside the area. If it shows high levels then they suggest getting your clothes washed and bag aired out before returning or going onto other flights where you have to exit screening.
