The United States seems to have become a nation of mine, mine, mine and screw you cutthroats. Most other nations get the we are in this together attitude for the most part so they look out for and help each other as needed for the betterment of all. Are these other nations perfect? No, they still let subtle inequalities in to the fabric of their societies but not as blatantly as exhibited in the US.
Growing up in the US in the 50's and 60's I saw much of this disparity in the cities and countryside. People living in homes that would be condemned if they housed livestock.
I then ended up in the poorest newest province in Canada. Poor was only a state of mind for most. Per capita we had the greatest number of millionaires in North America, full home ownership without debts was around 70% then, people would willingly open their wallets to donate to help each other. The worst housing in a native community was 10 times better then the typical housing for the poor whites in the US let alone what blacks and natives had to settle for. Then cable TV came along then the Internet, attitudes have fallen as the “American” influence has perculated in.
I have also watched as the American political parties have shifted and changed. From leftist Democrats to rightist Republicans with much overlap inbetween to the now hard right Evangelical Republican and the now center right Democrats but both at the bec and call of the monied interests. I get but don’t get why the US has fallen into a two party state with complete condemnation of alternative parties forming and really competing. For 2020 I hope the Democrats don’t again go for the percieved centerest candidate as they will again lose the engagement of the disaffected normally non voters as they did with Hillary in 2016 and risk losing even more maybe voters.
