Some Rough Honesty for Teachers

You know what? You don’t need your school’s Educational Technology Specialist. At least you shouldn’t. And, truth be told, you already knew that, didn’t you?

You’re a teacher. You know your subject matter, you know your students and you have the pedagogical skills to match the one to the other. If you can own all of that, why do you need someone else to help you post your homework assignments to the LMS or share PDF handouts with your students in Google Drive? Why can’t you keep track of how to connect your iPad to the classroom projector? Why can’t you remember your school email password? Are these things really beyond your (considerable) capabilities?

Of course they aren’t. They just weren’t part of your job description before. But times change.

It isn’t fair, you may not have seen it coming and there’s no way to put the genie back in the bottle: these things are now on your plate and they aren’t going away. The question becomes: what are you going to do about it?

I have an answer. I put together a list of 30 tasks that teachers do all the time. We all do them. Things like making handouts, or communicating with parents, or conducting quick checks for understanding. Simple tasks that you do in your classroom now that you can (or should) do more efficiently and effectively with technology. I took this list of tasks and found easy-to-use online tools to get them done… and I built a course.

It’s called the EdTech30 and its a series of short lessons –30 of them — that will help you fill your bag with the technology clubs that you’re missing. Sure, you’re going to know some of them, but some will be entirely new and every one of them will help you perform an actual task, on your own, in your classroom, to help your students achieve their potential.
